Islam on Triple Talaq

Marriage is a sacrosanct contract in Islam that leads to the formation of a family, the basic unit of a healthy society. But if disputes occur between a man and his wife, Islam instructs them to sort them out by mutual understanding, by temporarily refraining from sexual contact and showing displeasure. If this does not help, Islam urges the couple to seek third party arbitration. If this too does not solve the problem, the husband is given the option of talaq and the wife is given the option of khula.

Talaq is an elaborate and reversible process that can be given twice in a marriage. Options of reconciliation and direct remarriage are always open. But if given the third time, it becomes absolute and irreversible. Exhausting all three options at once is extremely detestable and amounts to a grave sin.

If practiced in letter and spirit, the Islamic process of reconciliation and divorce is the best one we have on earth today. We ought to study it and use it to save our marriages, to save our society.
